The Video testimony is from Shamboli village of Bidar District in Karnataka. Outlines the tale of Neelambika, who died after giving birth to her third child, due to lack of proper timely health care services during the delivery. This testimony demonstrates that merely providing infrastructural facilities without ensuring the system’s accountability to its people will not translate into better health outcomes.

Each year in India, roughly 28 million women experience pregnancy and 26 million have a live birth. Of these, an estimated 67,000 maternal deaths and one million newborn deaths occur each year. Thus, pregnancy-related mortality and morbidity continues to have a huge impact on the lives of Indian women. As per SRS 2010-12, MMR of Karnatka is 144 per thousand women. Despite of existence of national health programs for improving maternal and child health, maternal mortality and morbidity continues to be on the higher side. This may be due to many reasons such as early marriages, illiteracy, and ignorance, lack of health services and unavailability of transport facilities. One of the important reasons for maternal mortality is the non-acceptance or non-utilization and denial of maternal health care services, especially in the rural areas. |
