Grameen Vikas Sansthan

Context

Grameen Vikas Sansthan is a civil society organisation working with a vision to create a society free from any type of exploitation and injustice in an effort to ensure a better quality of life for the poor, deprived and marginalised sections of the community. It is working in Mau, Ghazipur and Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh on community mobilisation, monitoring and community based advocacy on reproductive health issues for deprived sections of community. Strengthening the local self governance and promotion of health awareness and literacy skills are the key strategies which the organisation has adopted. It has intensively intervened the concept of community mobilisation through CBO promotion also. The organisation is also working in "A" category district in term of HIV/AIDS, with a focus on STI issues. Its health awareness initiatives cover the capacity building sessions on health, and advocacy on issues of community health need.

Approaches to implementing Community monitoring/accountability

  • Strengthening the capacities of the target groups in a manner that they are sufficiently empowered to strive for initiating development activities on their own which will be sustainable in nature. 
  • Awareness on rights and developing a right based approach as well as citizenship development in the community.

Results and lessons

  • Community participation in development practices has increased remarkably. 
  • Mobilisation of more than 200,000 people through direct community level intervention in different programs.
