Approaches to implementing Community monitoring/accountability

Some of this quality of care work includes conducting and improving the quality of maternal audits and reviews in Africa and Asia.  In addition, through our technical assistance arm Ipact, we conduct training courses for monitoring, evaluating and providing leadership in maternal Health; and we are commissioned by governments and internacional organisations to measure maternal mortality and conduct evaluation studies

Results and Lessons

  • We have propagated an approach to improving accountability through non-punitive audit measures, which have improve the motivation and participation of health workers in achieving accountable health systems.
  • We have also conducted appreciative inquiry to improve care practices in health facilities and believe that local problem solving in positive and motivating environments can contribute to improved, accountable behaviour of health service providers.
