Institute of Human rights and civic values (IHRCV)

Context

Institute of Human rights and Civic values (IHRCV) is a grassroots National human rights NGO working to promote the integration of civic values, democracy an Human Rights in the activities of community stakeholders at the grassroots in the western part of Kenya.
The goals of IHRCV are
  • to increase the visibility of human rights movement in western Kenya
  • build the capacity of community groups to monitor delivery of public services purposely to stop corruption
  • strengthen links between community groups and movements across issues and sectors of good governance
To achieve all these, the organization in partnership with an American NGO, National Endowment for Democracy (NED) has established itself as a coordinating center for rural organizations developing pro-active human rights alternatives to existing policies, structures, and strategies at the grassroots in western Kenya guided by the 2010 constitution and devolution.

IHR&CV believes in high levels of responsibility to its members and communities where it works. The level of internal accountability is given high priority by evolving transparent and accountable structures of leadership and management of resources.

Commitment to popular Participation
IHR&CV as a human rights organization values community engagement and people’s participation in policy processes. For this reason all IHR&CV led initiatives will always remain participatory, consultative and people-driven.

Openness to mutual & continuous learning
IHR&CV is open and ready to give information to and learn from its members, partners, state agencies, public authorities and community groups with whom we work. This has been possible by development of a very open and effective communication and information sharing strategy that encourages easy flow and exchange at all levels.

Building strategic partnerships and relationships
IHR&CV believes in working through partnerships, networks and coalitions. This involves building local capacity, mobilizing civil society groups to play watchdog and oversight roles and joining hands with others to engage in policy influencing work. The partners include: government, private sector, donor agencies, professionals, media and community groups as well as building alliances with other CSOs through networks, coalitions and social movements is our priority.

Respect to gender, rights and diversity
Promotion of cultural diversity, gender mainstreaming and rights based approach to planning, policy formulation and facilitation takes centre stage within the Organization.
