Naretu Girls and Women Empowerment Program

Context

Naretu Girls and Women Empowerment Program is a community based organisation that focuses on girls and women health issues that are brought about by female genital mutilation, traditional abortion and other harmful cultural practices. As one of the pastoral community in Kenya and its poverty rate at 70%, health issues brought about by malnourishment and poor environment. We train in partnership with World Vision, AMREF & Ministry of Health the community and women on reproductive health and sanitation.
We also mobilise and sensitise the youth on HIV/AIDS & STIS and through life skilled and mentorship programs, we emphasis on behavior change among the young people. With the help of Maralal Catholic Dioces Peace Program, we offer technical support to the community especially during tribal clashes in the community where children and women are left alone without food, water or houses. We also take clients through counseling especially those who are traumatised and stigmatised from various diseases. We also do volunteer school counseling and reach also to the disabled children in the community.

Approaches to implementing Community monitoring/accountbility

We advocate and help the youth and women to start self-help groups that will enable them to get funds from the government and start activites that will help them generate income.

Results and lessons
