Native Medicare Charitable Trust (NMCT)

Context

Native Medicare Charitable Trust, known as NMCT was registered under charitable trust act in 1988. It began its activities with research on Alternate Medicines, Bio diversity conservation, Environmental Protection, Waste management, Forestry Seeds collection organization of Adivasis in Tribal villages. NMCT extended its activities by forming Self Help Groups for tribals and dalits, providing them capacity building and income generation activities.

  • Tribal Development
Livelihood support for 750 families in 18 villages of Tholampalayam & Velliankadu Panchayats, Karamadai Block, Coimbatore district. 300 families are supported for orchard plantations, border plants and another 450 families supported for non wadi activities such as sheep rearing, milch animals, bullock & carts, petty shops, Tailoring, vermin compost units
  • STI, HIV/AIDS Prevention
The Intervention of prevention of HIV/AIDS among Migrants and Industrial workers in the entire districts of Coimbatore & Tirupur.
  • HIV/AIDS Care & Support
800 families infected by HIV/AIDS in Pollachi North & South Blocks in Coimbatore districts provided support for Treatment Services, Emergency supports, Nutrition package, Education support
  • Care Home for vulnerable children
27 children belonging to the HIV/AIDS affected families provided free shelter Education upto College level, nutrition food & Medical services.
  • Women Empowerment
Over 1000 Women are organized into small Self Help Groups now emerged as a Community based organization namely Vimuktha Womens Federation

Approaches to implementing Community monitoring/accountability

The approach of Native Medicare Charitable Trust is community based and after the end of the particular project the activities are transferred to community based organizations which are trained in taking up the ownership and responsibility before the closure of the project, in continuing the objectives of the project.

Native Medicare Charitable Trust will continue as a resource organisation in providing training, capacity building, finance management in taking up the activities. It will also provide support in advocacy and linkages to the CBOs..
