Shelter and Settlements Alternatives: Uganda Human Settlements Network (SSA:UHSNET)

Context

Shelter and Settlements Alternatives: Uganda Human Settlements Network (SSA:UHSNET) is a network of civil society organisations, communities, individuals, and private sector working together with the main purpose of lobbying, advocating and sharing information for better policies, programs and practices towards sustainable improvement of human settlements in Uganda. SSA:UHSNET seeks to address the challenge of networking, based on the recognition that there are several stakeholders operating in the human settlements sector in Uganda, contributing to one or several aspects of adequate housing such as access to water and sanitation or security of tenure, who lack an organised voice to effectively address constraints to adequate housing especially for urban slum dwellers.

Approaches to implementing Community monitoring/accountability

Results and lessons

Donors have recognised our organisation as a best practice in mainstreaming gender and HIV and AIDS in housing in the Eastern and Southern Region. We have developed Gender and HIV and AIDS Policies at Organisational level, a Gender Training Manual to be used by all network members in mainstreaming gender in human settlements, we have identified groups of vulnerable women whom we are helping to acquire land and will eventually build houses for them. They are currently being trained in legal issues to do with property rights and recourse.
Reporting is a good vessel of communication and continued advocacy work because it helps us to know the challenges to address and the achievements to be proud of and build on.
